This laid-back and beloved coastal town in north-eastern New South Wales is known for its infectious surf culture, colourful kombi vans and a relaxed vibe that keeps people coming back for more. What Byron Bay also dishes up, is a culinary scene beyond expectations with groovy outdoor cafés and restaurants off the beaten track, serving up your favourites to cure that post-beach hunger.
Here are five munch-able hotspots we cannot recommend enough:
This beautiful outdoor café has got to be the most aesthetic place you’ve ever eaten, with rugs and cushions to sit on surrounded by leafy palms and of course, the food is just as pretty. The team at Folk serve up plant-based dishes including healthy nourish bowls, decadent smoothies and their famous banana hotcakes.
Located bang in the middle of town within a tiny laneway, this funky Vietnamese joint is churning out all the best Asian fusion dishes—fried chicken bao, Peking duck pancakes and miso caramel eggplant … need we say more?
This little hidden gem is located a short drive out of Byron in Federal, where lies an authentic outdoor café cooking up the best Japanese you could dream of. Grab a wooden table in their courtyard and sink your teeth into their vegetable tempura bowl or a chicken katsu burger … or both.
The Top Shop
A Byron local favourite—picture every man and his dog sitting out on the grass in the sunshine, with a fresh acai bowl or a burger with the lot. This little takeaway kiosk is a winner, just be warned about the Ibis birds (or bin chickens as Aussies call them), who will definitely try to steal your brekky.
If you’re after something more formal, perhaps to celebrate something or someone special, book in a lunch at this rustic farm-to-plate venue. Let the kids run free in the paddocks while you sit out on the deck grazing on burrata and a much-deserved Aperol.
While there’s plenty more places to visit, be sure to give your tastebuds a feed at one of these stand-outs.
